In the days of
Mordechai and Estherבִּימֵי מָרְדְּכַי וְאֶסְתֵּרin Shushan the
Capital [of Persia],בְּשׁוּשַׁן הַבִּירָהwhen the evil Haman
rose up against them,כְּשֶׁעָמַד עֲלֵיהֶם הָמָן הָרָשָׁעhe sought to
destroy, to kill,בִּקֵּשׁ לְהַשְׁמִיד לַהֲרוֹגand to annihilate
all the Jews,וּלְאַבֵּד אֶת כָּל הַיְהוּדִיםyoung and old,
infants and women,מִנַּעַר וְעַד זָקֵן טַף וְנָשִׁיםin one day, the
thirteenth dayבְּיוֹם אֶחָד בִּשְׁלוֹשָׁה עָשָׂרof the
twelfth month,לְחֹדֶשׁ שְׁנֵים עָשָׂרwhich is the
month of Adar,הוּא חֹדֶשׁ אֲדָרand to plunder
their wealth—וּשְׁלָלָם לָבוֹזAnd You, in Your
abundant mercy,וְאַתָּה בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ הָרַבִּיםannulled
his counsel,הֵפַרְתָּ אֶת עֲצָתוֹfrustrated
his intention,וְקִלְקַלְתָּ אֶת מַחֲשַׁבְתּוֹand brought his evil
plan upon his own head,וַהֲשֵׁבוֹתָ לּוֹ גְּמוּלוֹ בְּרֹאשׁוֹand they hanged
him and his sonsוְתָלוּ אוֹתוֹ וְאֶת בָּנָיוupon the
gallows.עַל הָעֵץAnd for all
the foregoingוְעַל כֻּלָּםblessed, exalted
and extolledיִתְבָּרַךְ וְיִתְרוֹמַם וְיִתְנַשֵׂאyour Name,
our Kingשִׁמְךָ מַלְכֵּנוּconstantly,
